The Mad Trapper of Rat River
On December 31, 1931 shots were fired form the 8’ x 10’ cabin that Albert Johnson called home, wounding Constable Alfred ‘Buns’ King. Constable King and others were sent to Johnson’s cabin, located on the Rat River in Canada’s remote North Country, to investigate complaints filed about Johnson by neighboring trappers. Following the shoot out, Albert Johnson fled to the rugged high country of the Yukon. For five weeks, Johnson survived the punishing mountains in 50 below zero weather, evading hundreds of Mounties and dog teams. It was said that Johnson could snow shoe 2 miles for every one mile the dog teams could travel. Even the native mountain men of the area were astonished as they witnessed feats they thought to be impossible. Johnson scaled the sheer cliffs of slippery ice and survived the numbing cold of the upper reaches of the Eagle River, Yukon. On February 17, 1932, Albert Johnson was finally cornered with the assistance of a monoplane piloted by W.R. May. It took 9 bullets to finally bring down the fugitive, but not before The Mad Trapper of Rat River became a legend. The Mad Trapper 2007 fall hunting and outdoor selection is rugged and tough, just like the Mad Trapper of Rat River.
